Seiko Launches New Additions to the Prospex Speedtimer Line

Seiko's Recent Launches

Seiko's recent additions to its lineup include the Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph (ref. SQR047) and a special 100th Anniversary Limited Edition model (ref. SQR049). The regular production SQR047 sports a classic panda dial, while the limited-edition SQR049, restricted to 1,000 pieces, showcases a unique blue-grey color scheme. Both models pay homage to Seiko's rich history while offering a modern twist.

Design and Specifications

Both the SQR047 and SQR049 share identical specifications, with a 42mm diameter and 14.6mm thickness stainless steel case complemented by a newly designed nine-link bracelet. The bracelets and cases exhibit a mix of brushed and polished finishes. The SQR047 features a silver-white dial with blue-grey subdials, whereas the SQR049 reverses this color scheme. Both models are inspired by the 1972 Speedtimer ref. 6138-8020 "Panda," evident in their design details such as the orange-tipped chronograph hands and the positioning of the Seiko and Prospex logos.

Mechanical Details

At the heart of these timepieces is the Seiko caliber 8R48, an automatic movement known for its reliability and precision. This in-house movement includes a column wheel and vertical clutch, operates at 4 Hz, and offers a 45-hour power reserve.

The blue-grey SQR049, celebrating Seiko's 100th anniversary, is limited to 1,000 pieces. The panda dial SQR047 is not limited in production. The SQR047 is priced at $2,500, while the SQR049 will retail for $2,700. Availability for both models begins in December at select retailers. The SQR049 also includes an additional leather strap.

Our Editorial View

These new Prospex Speedtimer chronographs are an exciting addition to Seiko's lineup. The panda dial version particularly draws from a beloved 1970s Seiko design, albeit in a more contemporary and slightly slimmer form.

These models follow Seiko's trend of infusing heritage elements into its new releases, often accompanied by a higher price tag. However, these chronographs appear well-executed, boasting an upgraded bracelet and case design and a balanced, uncluttered dial. The 14.6mm thickness and the 4:30 date window might be points of contention for some, but overall, the pricing seems reasonable given the quality of the in-house movement and the overall design. These watches are strong contenders in the current market, enhancing the Speedtimer collection significantly.
