Piaget Polo Flying Tourbillon Moonphase: A Bold New Complication in Titanium

Piaget has introduced a new addition to its Polo collection: the Polo Flying Tourbillon Moonphase. This watch combines two sophisticated complications—a flying tourbillon and an astronomical moon phase—within a lightweight titanium case. Powered by Piaget’s ultra-thin calibre 642P, this model marks a significant step forward for the Polo line, blending sporty aesthetics with high horology.

Design and Case

The 44mm titanium case is a standout feature of the new Polo Flying Tourbillon Moonphase. While the Polo collection has previously featured cases in gold and steel, this is only the second time titanium has been used, following the 2024 Ceramic Skeleton model. The case is slim at 9.8mm, thanks to the ultra-thin 642P movement, and maintains a 100m water resistance rating, making it suitable for both formal and casual wear.

The case alternates between polished and satin-brushed finishes, with blue PVD gadroons on the flanks that echo the design of the original 1979 Polo model. The hollowed-out areas on the case sides add a sporty, streamlined aesthetic, reminiscent of 1930s design elements.

Dial and Complications

The dial features a blue gadrooned background, a signature Piaget design, which frames the two central complications arranged in a figure-eight formation. The flying tourbillon occupies the upper section, while the moon phase indicator sits at 6 o’clock.

  • Flying Tourbillon: Suspended in a transparent well, the tourbillon is visible from both the front and back of the watch. The cage is crafted from lightweight titanium and features a stylised “P” at its apex.
  • Moon Phase Indicator: This precision astronomical complication displays four lunar phases (new, first quarter, full, and last quarter) against a ribbed blue background. It requires adjustment only once every 122 years, with a corrector located at 9 o’clock for easy calibration.

The dial also includes a cushion-shaped openworked section that reveals the motion works, decorated with perlage. Applied indices and hands are filled with luminescent material for improved legibility.

Movement

At the heart of the watch is Piaget’s manual-winding calibre 642P, a rectangular-shaped movement first introduced in the 2012 Gouverneur Tourbillon. With a thickness of just 4mm, this ultra-thin movement features a 3Hz flying tourbillon escapement and the aforementioned moon phase complication.

While the screw-down caseback obscures much of the movement, the finishes meet Piaget’s high standards, ensuring both performance and visual appeal.

Strap Options

The Polo Flying Tourbillon Moonphase comes with a blue ribbed rubber strap, which complements the blue accents on the dial and case. An additional blue alligator strap is included, both featuring a quick-release system for easy interchangeability.
