Oris ProPilot X Caliber 400 'Laser': A Dazzling Display of Color on the Wrist

Oris continues to innovate within its ProPilot X collection, first launched in 2022. Among the initial offerings, the standout was undoubtedly the vibrant salmon dial. This year saw the introduction of the "Kermit" with its lively green dial. Now, Oris takes a bold step forward at Dubai Watch Week with the ProPilot X "Laser". This model emerges from a partnership with a Zurich-based research lab, utilizing a groundbreaking laser technique to craft a dial with an unprecedented color-changing effect.

Oris Pro Pilot Caliber 400 Laser

The star of the show is the dial. Oris employed a pioneering laser technique in watchmaking, achieving a color-changing dial that shifts hues based on the light's angle. This technique involves manipulating the surface to disperse light into its spectrum, creating a rainbow effect. The dial, transitioning from green to blue, achieves this through the selective reflection of light waves, notably enhancing reds while emphasizing greens and blues.

In addition to its mesmerizing dial, the "Laser" maintains the classic ProPilot X design, featuring a 39mm titanium case and matching bracelet. At its core lies the Oris caliber 400, a proprietary movement boasting an impressive five-day power reserve. Since its debut in 2020, the caliber 400 has undergone refinements, with the latest version omitting the date function for the first time.

This innovative timepiece is priced at $5,200 and is currently available at authorized Oris dealers, including the Hodinkee Shop.

Our Take

The titanium dial exhibits a stunning gradient, shifting from blue to green to purple, yet contains no actual pigment. Instead, the laser treatment alters the titanium's surface, creating a shimmering rainbow effect through reflected light.

This watch appears to be a fitting addition to the modernized ProPilot X collection. The omission of the date window at 6 o'clock is a welcome change, aligning with the dial's clean, uncluttered aesthetic.

The "Laser" model is priced at $5,200, slightly higher than the standard and "Kermit" models, but the advanced laser technology justifies the price. At this competitive price point, it offers a unique, visually striking option for enthusiasts.

Oris appears committed to pushing boundaries with the ProPilot X line, embracing both playful elements and cutting-edge technology. This latest release is a testament to their innovative spirit.
