Exploring the New H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Tourbillon Burgundy

H. Moser & Cie. introduces a striking new addition to its tourbillon range with the Pioneer Tourbillon 'Burgundy', a timepiece that combines everyday wearability with the sophisticated allure of a high horology complication.

Design and Craftsmanship

The case, complemented by a domed sapphire crystal, measures 12mm in thickness, offering a sleek profile suitable for various wrist sizes.

Dial

The watch features a burgundy fumé dial with sunburst brushing that fades to black around the edges, enhancing the visual depth. This is paired with applied red gold indices and hands, both filled with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. The tourbillon at 6 o'clock remains a focal point, set against the subtle backdrop of a transparent lacquered logo.

Movement and Functionality

The HMC 805 calibre powers this timepiece. An evolution of the HMC 804, this movement features skeletonized bridges with an anthracite finish, visible through the caseback. It provides a 55-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 21,600 VpH, ensuring both precision and reliability.

Comfort and Durability

The Pioneer Tourbillon 'Burgundy' is fitted with a khaki green rubber strap, an unexpected but tasteful choice that complements the watch’s burgundy dial. This choice enhances the model’s versatility, making it suitable for casual wear and more adventurous activities, underscored by its impressive 12 ATM water resistance.

Pricing

Priced at CHF 59,900, the Pioneer Tourbillon 'Burgundy' is positioned as a premium offering within the H. Moser & Cie. portfolio. Available now, this model provides an excellent value proposition in the luxury tourbillon segment, blending unique aesthetic details with robust functionality.

Our Thoughts

The Pioneer Tourbillon 'Burgundy' has received praise for its striking burgundy dial, which is beautifully complemented by the red gold case. However the choice of strap clashes with the dial's bold burgundy colour. You can always get a new strap, but for the 59,000 Swiss Francs this should have been thought more.

The tourbillon it's hallmark of high horology, but Moser's earlier innovations, such as the double-spring mechanism, offered more practical benefits compared to the more ornamental tourbillon, showcased here. This tends to inflate the price and maybe a simpler, less mechanically complex models like the Centre Seconds might be a better showcase for the colour scheme.

Additionally, while the minimal branding is appreciated, allowing the watch's design to speak for itself, there seems to be a disconnect for some wearers, who find the emotional resonance of the timepiece lacking despite its aesthetic appeal. This underscores a broader conversation about what makes a watch resonate with its wearer beyond mere appearances.

In summary, while the Pioneer Tourbillon 'Burgundy' is undoubtedly a visually compelling piece, it might benefit from a more restrained approach to its mechanical features to better align with market expectations in the luxury watch market, but as we know, H. Moser & Cie has been a strong design innovator and only time (and market response), will tell.
